Anti-bullying and fashion hold hands in Wales
AAB is chosen charity of Fashion Showcase Wales
October 14 2008

The biggest and most spectacular fashion event of its kind ever to be presented in Wales has chosen to support Act Against Bullying this year.

Presented by Radio 1’s Bethan Elfyn and BB Aled Jones, from the Chris Moyles Show, Fashion Showcase Wales, sponsored by L’Oreal Professional ,is being held at the Swalec Stadium in Cardiff on November 2nd at 7pm.

The founder of the spectacular, a former model herself, Kate Handley says ‘Many young people are bullied simply for being different. Not fitting with the masses is often the reason people are victimised and ostracised. Many young people ask themselves on a daily basis…’Why don’t fit in?’ I wish I was like everybody else. Fashion Showcase Wales shouts from the rooftops ‘It’s good to be different’.

'Many of our show contributors were bullied at some time in their lives..in short because they are creative, non conformists who now revel in their ‘difference’ Our message is simple…to be different is to be an individual and individuality makes you special. As well as endorsing their message through the show we are donating a percentage of ticket sales to Act Against Bullying.

Fashion Showcase Wales was launched in 2006 with a simple philosophy to platform and celebrate talent and excellence in the arts industries in Wales. This year they are focusing on Welsh design talent, in particular student and design graduates.

Act Against Bullying founder Louise Burfitt-Dons says: ‘Teaming up with Fashion Showcase Wales is exactly what our campaigning is all about. At AAB we are currently running an anti-peer pressure campaign ‘Keep Your Own Mind, It’s Cool to be Kind’ to break the trendy tribalism mould and promote individuality. In other words, we are trying to get young people weaned off that group obsession which can foster bullying behaviour. Telling young people to be proud of their individuality or waht makes them different from the group is an essential message today. Plus, creative is cool. And it is hard to be truly creative unless you are a little bit different, isn't it? We are delighted therefore to be chosen as this years Charity focus.’
